Whether you are a cupcake lady, a semi-professional chef or even if you don’t cook at all but want to have a statement piece in your immaculate stainless steel kitchen, you could not do better than the classic Kenwood kMix design. When Ken Wood introduced the Kenwood Chef to the world in 1950, I wonder if he imagined that 65 years later the overall concept would be identical to his original idea.
In the 50s and 60s, no middle-class kitchen was complete without a Kenwood mixer standing discreetly on a worktop.
Now in 2015, little has changed except that underneath that famous Kenwood façade is a high-tech device with electronic switching and modern materials……. But it is still the same piece of classic design that our mothers and grandmothers enjoyed.
If you asked the average housewife to name what she thought were the best stand cake mixers, the first word that would come into her head would be Kenwood and following that would be kMix because this latest incarnation of the Kenwood kMix LMX52 stand mixer is acquiring its own cult status.
Cake making ladies all over the world will know that the Kenwood mixing paddle spins in one direction, while its housing mechanism, spins in the other direction – the so-called famous Planetary mixing motion. So unlike most other mixers, you know that all of the mixture is constantly picked up from the sides of the bowl which results in totally even mixing.
The 5L mixing bowl is stainless steel and not glass or plastic for several reasons, ranging from robustness to hygiene.
I wonder how many cooks have the experience of intending to create a butter icing mix – which, as we all know is no more than icing sugar, butter or soft margarine – switching on the mixer and being hit by what looks like a volcanic ash cloud……. As the paddle hits the icing sugar and distributes it over the kitchen – and you.
This is where the ‘soft start function’ of the Kenwood kMix KMX52 stand mixer is so useful. When you switch on, the kMix does not fire up like Jeremy Clarkson in a Ferrari but offers a much more sedate gradual build-up of speed so that not only does all of your mix remain in a bowl but by the time it reaches full operating speed, your ingredients have been gently folded together. Obviously the same applies to wet ingredients, resulting in minimal ‘splash’. Some well-known mixers attempt to solve this problem with a lid but the best stand mixers use intelligent electronics.
As you might expect, Kenwood recognises that you always need the right tools for the job. That is why you don’t just get the Kbeater – which incidentally will be your everyday tool, but for you bread makers, there is a dough hook and of course, there’s the balloon whisk so that you need never again spend 15 minutes beating that double cream at the last minute and sitting down to your pudding with an aching arm!
Modern kitchens appear to come in all sorts of shades and colours, as do food mixers. This range comes in seven different colours but if you want to go for one which will match any colour scheme that you may decide to have in your kitchen in the future (and yes it WILL last that long!), I would go for the Almond Cream. Not only is this a colour which will match every cupboard and surface that you can imagine, but of all the colours, it says “Kenwood”.
So, whether you’re a traditionalist or a modernist, it makes no difference. This particular model will confirm that you do have style!
Although we’ve covered the planetary action and the soft start, the more technically minded among you may be interested to know that the power unit is a 500W motor, which is man enough for anything that you put in the 5 L stainless steel bowl. In fact, there is a five-year guarantee and all you have to do is to register your machine on purchase. The Kenwood kMix is designed to be with you for a very long time.
Once you have come to grips with your Kenwood kMix (it should take all of 5 minutes), there is little doubt that you will be drawn to Kenwood attachments, designed to plug into this base unit. After all, this is the one that will be standing on your worktop so Kenwood have given it to power outlets, so that you can plug in say, the Blender, Pasta Extruder, or even the Meat Grinder. You will be pleased to hear that the pasta extruder and meatgrinder outlet is designed to turn at slow speed but give you very high torque, in other words power.
Needless to say, all ‘extras’ are available in the same colour although there is absolutely nothing to stop you going for either the traditional colours of Raspberry and Peppercorn or even the more modern colours of Candy, Maroon and Citrus…….and there’s even a wild rainbow-striped version called the Barcelona! As is the case with all classic designs, they all match.

This was bought for my daughter she absolutely loves it. It’s her first stand mixer and she could not belief how quick it was with the power and speed. At the moment she’s not used the dough hook and looking forward to using that. It came with an unexpected rubber edge paddle beater which was a nice surprise. I bought this in a lightening deal, so it was a fantastic price. Half the price at what it cost me for my Kitchen Aid. Seeing my daughter’s in action I would say they are on a par. Reading the reviews it does say the KMix is more powerful. I’m sure it will last her many years.
I was disappointed there was no recipe book included, just a few recipe cards. I did purchase the Kenwood Chef mixer book for her as a lot of reviews recommended, at 1p plus postage which it was a steel. It was supposed to be used but looked as if it had never been open. It does have recipes for the attachments for the chef as well. But lots of recipe’s you can use for the KMix. It would be nice if Kenwood made more attachments for the KMix. I do not understand why the do not. In this respect the Kitchen Aid is in front. If you only want it for use with the attachments you get with it,this one is for you. You can purchase a few attachments , but they could offer a whole lot more.
Both the basic machine as well as all the accessories are both beautifully and robustly made. The Kenwood kMix KMX52 Stand Mixer is certainly the best cake mixer I have ever come across. As you would expect, it is beautifully made of aluminium, but that doesn’t really matter because once you start using it, you will not be putting it away in a cupboard…… so you won’t be needing to lift it but if you do, it’ll be much easier for you to handle than some of the other less sophisticated stand mixers on the market.
There are couple of other touches which are perhaps worth mentioning. For instance, one of the in-the-box items is a specially designed spatula which makes sure that you are able to extract every last bit of mix from the bowl – which will certainly make the washing up a lot easier. And if you are a novice baker, there are some recipe cards which will help to get you going as will the very well-written instruction manual.
With a six position rotary switch and a very simple button press to remove the beater, whisk or hook, this is a high-tech very simple to use appliance.
